Key Genes That Shape Your Aussiedoodle
Understanding these core gene pairs helps you interpret predictions and know why DNA testing matters.
The Merle Pattern Gene
A single copy (Mm) creates the mottled coat. Two copies (MM) — double merle — causes serious deafness and vision defects. Never breed merle × merle.
Coat Curl & Shedding
Two copies (CC) → tight curls, minimal shedding. One copy (Cc) → wavy. Zero copies (cc) → straight coat that sheds more noticeably.
Facial Hair & Low-Shed Coat
Creates the signature beard and eyebrows. Dogs without it (ff) have an “improper coat” that tends to shed significantly more.
Dilute Colors (Blue, Silver)
Two recessive copies (dd) dilute black to blue/grey and chocolate to silver. One copy (Dd) is a silent carrier.
Drug Sensitivity
Australian Shepherds have a high rate of this mutation causing dangerous sensitivity to common drugs. DNA testing is critical before any treatment.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
A recessive eye disease causing gradual blindness. Both parents must carry the variant for a puppy to be affected. Only DNA testing reveals carrier status.
F1, F1B, F2 & Multigen Compared
Each generation cross produces different trait probabilities at a glance.
